Cafe Tomo
Arcata, CA
September 9, 1998
|
It was a sold out house at Cafe Tomo, a sushi
restaurant nestled in the small town of Arcata.
Sound problems plagued the band early on with
Charlie's guitar amp blowing out not far into
the first song "Boogaloo Boogie".
Stanton asked if anyone in the audience had
a guitar amplifier that they could run home
and get. Some creative re-wiring kept things
somewhat together for two more tunes, a sultry
"Witch Doctor" and an upbeat "Nalgas",
after which they decided to take a break until
a new amp arrived. A kind local was quick to
deliver what looked like a late model Fender
stage amp which did the trick in a nice way
with a really warm tone. Technical problems
behind them, the band continued with an aggressive
"Tchfunkta". Monk's "Green Chimney's",
Chester Thompson's "Power House" and
"Farmstead Antiques" rounded out the
65 minute set.
A stretched out "Common Ground"
opened the second set, this one more than
15 minutes long. "Magnolia Triangle"
set the pace for the next hour which was punctuated
by a handful of medleys including Mingus'
"Better Git It In Yer Soul" and
Miles Davis' "Miles Ahead". The
percussive moment pictured above is "Blues
for Ben" with Skerik and Stanton beating
up an air conditioning unit above the stage
while Charlie takes it out on Stanton's drums.
The encore kicked off with Skerik's beat box
- multi-layered looped samples of twisted
saxophonics. Stanton picked up the beat and
a heavy jam ensued to wrap up another adventurous
set.
