Sharon Riley Rexach

Sharon Riley Rexach (b. November 7, 1946, Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a celebrated Puerto Rican actress, singer, and director, known for her versatile work across television, theater, and film. Born to the legendary singer-composer Sylvia Rexach and U.S. Army officer William Riley, Sharon's early life was shaped by both artistic heritage and personal challenges. She began her career as a child star, debuting at age seven in the beloved sitcom La Taverna India, where she played an orphan under the protection of the character “Diplo.”Following her mother's passing, Sharon spent part of her youth in Buffalo, New York, under the care of Franciscan nuns. Upon returning to Puerto Rico in the late 1960s, she pursued formal drama studies at the University of Puerto Rico under renowned playwright Dean Zayas.Her theater career flourished with roles in acclaimed productions such as A Streetcar Named Desire, View From the Bridge, Tastes Like Honey, and The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. Though she occasionally stepped away from television to raise her daughter, she remained a prominent figure in Puerto Rican dramatic arts. Sharon is known for playing the role of her mother in a prominent documentary on the life of Sylvia Rexach.In the early 1970s, Sharon recorded Sylvia Rexach en la Voz de Sharon Riley. This album is a living testament to Sylvia Rexach’s eternal song. Sharon Riley embodies the most faithful voice of her legacy, joined by guitarist Tutti Umpierre and producer José Pagán. Each track is steeped in nostalgia, tenderness, and bohemian artistry, echoing Sylvia’s genius in poetry and music. To date, this collaboration has resulted in three releases by Maritzaida: Sentimientos En Vivo, El Otro Camino, and Radio Bohemia Volumen I which featured a performance by Sharon.Over the years, Sharon has emerged not only as a guardian of her mother’s musical legacy but also as an independent artistic force, bridging generations with her performances and interpretation of Sylvia Rexach’s work.
